Pre-Season Testing | Formula 1 Stuffs | 2021

What is F1 Pre-Season Testing and Why it is happening?

Wait is over.

Formula 1 new season starts with pre-season testing in Bahrain International Circuit.

We are all know the schedule of F1 season (If not see image below 😊).

Questions arise in your mind is correct. Schedule for races. But where is the testing there.

Yes.

F1-Pre-season testing is the first sight for the fans to see the exact cars on track.

What are the important parameters to check in testing?

First come first, it is blindly to see the cars with excitement on track as I said and main objective is to check the CFD.

(Computational fluid dynamics is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to analyse and solve problems that involve fluid flows)

Mainly to check the aerodynamics of the car and how the new car is on track with new modifications and sensors.

We can say pre-season testing is mainly for Engineering department to ensure the given input in car is good to race. Also, after long time of work Pit stop guys to remember the check and rehearse the work along with track engineers.

Testing Equipment:

1) Aero Rakes

During testing teams attach “areo rakes” to the car. The grids are made up of kiel probe sensors which measures the flow of air. They are fitted to measure the wake from front tires or airflow towards the rear wing.

Data captured is used to create a virtual map of airflow and compared to simulation data to make sure car’s performance is in line with virtual expectations.

This helps engineers to develop the cars and ultimately make them faster.

2) Pitot Tubes

It is used to measure the fluid flow velocity during testing.

3) Kiel Probe sensors

4) Stickers

Heat sensitive sticker is used to measure the heat at critical areas applied in body works. The mark shows the temperature.

5) Observing Cameras

Cameras are used to record the happenings in circuit. Teams are monitoring the main check points across the track and can able to improve the car.
