Female formula 1 drivers – In Grand Prix
F1 is male dominating sport. But, 5 women racing drivers
have entered Grand Prix, although only two of them ever qualified and started a
race.
They are like bright starts in sky among all.
Most of Grand Prix enters – Lella Lombardi with 12 starts.
Maria Teresa de Filippis, Italian driver pioneered to enter formula
1 in season 1958. She ended the career at Monaco Grand Prix after race director
denied her involvement by saying, “the only helmet that a woman should use is
the hairdresser".
Lella Lombardi enters formula 1 after 15 years at 1974 without
female drivers in this sport. She is the only women scored points in World
Championship.
She is the only female driver of formula 1 scored maximum entries
17 with 12 starts.
In 1976, Divina Galica joined for British Grand Prix along
with Lombardi. This was the only Grand prix with multiple female drivers
entered in formula One history. But unfortunately, both were not qualified for
the start of race.
South African, Desiré Wilson joined in 1980 tried to qualify
for British Grand Prix but not succeeded.
Giovanna Amati is the last female driver attempted to formula
One in the year 1992.
She is Italian Driver also failed to qualify races.
The sport is still encouraging many female drivers for testing and development of many teams in current year.
